speeding in an unknown area

Have you ever been slightly speeding in an area you aren't very familiar with, when you notice all the other cars around you are driving well under the speed limit?  It makes you think that the locals know something you don't, like there is a speed trap or a sharp turn ahead.

yeah...well I feel like that today.

dumb things said during the championship round

Who said it: Packer fans
What they said: "If only Brett threw a better ball in overtime, we would be in the Superbowl"
Why it's dumb:  If the NYG special teams connected on either 2 field goals in the 4th quarter, Favre's interception wouldn't have occurred and the Pack would still not be in the Superbowl.

Who said it: Some media guy
What they said: "Tynes has kicked the Giants into the Superbowl!!!!"
Why it's dumb:  He missed, not one, but TWO field goals to win the game in regulation.

Who said it: Some media guy
What they said: "The Giants still won despite combination of Strahan and Usimenyora only have 1 sack"
Why it's dumb:  The Giants D-line was bringing pressure ALL DAY.  Although the DEs only recorded 1 sack, there were numerous hurries and pressure to force Favre to scramble.  The Giants D held the Packers run game to 28 yards.

Who said it:  Some media guy
What they said: "Brett Favre has changed to managing the game, rather than slinging the ball over the field.  That is what the Packers need"
Why it's dumb:  Brett Favre hasn't been managing the game.  All season he's been slinging the ball and taking risks  that the media calls "courageous Favre plays". (When some young QB does it, it's a "stupid mental mistake").  The reason it looks like he's managing now is because in week 8 (or was it 10?), Ryan Grant brought a badly needed running game.  This caused opposing defenses to pay closer attention to the run.  Allowing Favre a little more room to throw.  It was the running game, not "Favre changing this style".

I'll add more as I think of them

It's more than just a game

It looks like I can't even have 2 blog posts without returning to sports.

The NFL's conference championship games are this weekend.  They bring some interesting story lines:

Chargers @ Patriots:
This is no Patriots vs Colts rivalry yet, but there is some bad blood between these 2 teams over recent years.  The Patriots win in San Diego during the playoffs last year cause a complete coaching turnover starting with the mass exodus of the assistant coaches and culminating with the firing of a  47-33 Marty Schottenheimer.  The loss also caused star running back and 2006 MVP LaDanian Tomlinson to talk about how the Patriots have no class and that stems from the coach.  The Patriots also have 2 former Chargers stars in Rodney Harrison and Junior Seau.

The Chargers are coming into this game with momentum and emotion.   The bounded after a slow 1-3 start and upset the Colts at home in the divisional round of the playoffs.  The accomplished this feat with their offensive leaders out by the 3rd quarter.  Antonio Gates came into the game with a busted toe and was not effective at all.  LT left the game in the 2nd quarter with a knee injury and Phillip Rivers exited the game in the 3rd.  Somehow  they were able to beat the Colts  with Billy Volek leading the charge.

All of that momentum and emotion will not propel the Chargers to victory.  The Patriots have too much going for them.  The Chargers front seven will have their hands full trying to get pressure on Tom Brady.  The Patriots' O-line will give Brady enough time to complete his throws.  LE Igor Olyshansky decided to feed the tiger by talking mild trash this week.  Patriots RG will be tasked to making Olyshansky eat his words.  The Patriots always find a way to embarrass those who talk trash.

I think the Patriots will abuse the slot.  Wes Welker or Jabar Gaffney will probably be vital in this game.  The Chargers need to pressure Brady and they'll need some exotic blitz packages to get there.  The OLine will pay attention to ProBowler Shawne Merriman.  I think surprising them with using Shaun Phillips on inside blitzes or the occassional corner blitz would help.

Patriots: 31  Chargers: 20

ugh... work so distracted me from finishing this post.  I probably don't have time to talk about the Packers and Giants. Maybe later tonight.

Beware Wireless companies bearing gifts

I've been waiting for January 22nd for a while now.  That is when my Verizon Wireless contract is up.  I have been planning on switching to AT&T (formerly Cingular) for awhile now. Most of the people I spend my most minutes with are on AT&T.  Plus I'm probably going to get an iPhone, which is only available to AT&T.

note: the following is just a brief story and in no way is the whole story.  I'm just trying to be as brief as possible.
January 4th,2008:
I'm sleeping in a bit because I just got back from my trip to the Rose Bowl a few nights before and I worked late the previous night.  I think around 10am I get a phone call.  In a sleepy haze, I answer the phone and there is Verizon Representative on the phone asking me if I've been satisfied with my service.  I say yes and he goes on to say he's adding 1000 rollover minutes for my account to be used over the year.  I say "uh huh, okay".  I get off the phone.  As I drift back to sleep, I'm thinking "psh. that 1000 rollover minutes would have been really useful a year ago when I went over my minutes 2 months in a row".

January 17th, 2008
I check on my Verizon Wireless account to find out when my contract ends.  MacWorld didn't announce new iPhones so I might go ahead and switch service and get one.  "Contract Expires: 1/4/2009"  WTF?  I quickly piece it together that the 1000 rollover minutes was probably an implicit 1 year contract.

I snatch up my phone and head outside the office to call Verizon to get this fixed.  I explain to the representative my situation and thinking this should be a "oh no problem" quick fix, I'm on the phone for 15 minutes.   I was first told that there is nothing to be done about this.  In the back of my mind I was already composing the angry email about Verizon's sneaky tactics of calling people when they are asleep to get them to agree to contract extensions.  Why can't I get out of this considering: 1) They didn't ask for any confirming information that it was the account holder who answer the phone.  All they asked for was my name.  2) I haven't even been billed for this months billing period.  3) It's only been 2 weeks since the contract was "extended".

The CSR puts me on hold to talk to a supervisor.  (I appreciate that I didn't have to ask him to go talk to his supervisor).  He comes back to tell me they are looking for another number that I need to call.  I've now added the "false barriers that one has to go through to fix simple issues in hopes of customers giving up and accepting their new contracts" paragraph to my letter.  The CSR comes back and tells me that they couldn't find the number, so his supervisor decided that since it hasn't been 30 days yet, he'll go ahead and remove the new rollover stuff and put my contract back to 1/22/2008.

I don't even feel like proof reading this entry.  (Implying that I proof read any of my entries :) )

Is this some greater power saying I shouldn't get an iPhone?
